Resources
Preparation
Before You Start
Test ZAR® Deck & Siding Semi-Transparent Stain on an inconspicuous area to determine the final color. Also, the wood must have a moisture content of 20% or lower. This is best determined by a moisture meter. If you don’t have a meter and wish to see if wood is ready to stain, sprinkle a few drops of water on it. If the water is easily absorbed, proceed. If not, wait 3 – 4 months and retest. Do not pre-treat or use a water-repellent preservative. Do not apply over clear finishes.
Limitations
Overcoating of pre-coated/treated decks could cause stain absorption issues and inconsistent color formation if wood pores are not open, or if previous material contained silicone as a water beading agent.
Wood species, color, and grain patterns influence the appearance of the stain. Test on a small, inconspicuous area prior to full application.
Surface Preparation
The surface must be clean, dry, and in good condition. Remove all mildew, dirt, loose wood fibers, oil, and grease. Repair or replace any loose, cracked, or warped boards.
All mildew (dark, fuzzy, or powdery deposits) must be removed with the following solution: 1⁄3 cup heavy-duty laundry detergent to 1‑quart household bleach to 3 quarts of warm water. Wear protective eye goggles and waterproof gloves when handling cleaning solution. Apply with a scrubbing brush, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry before staining.
For Grayed Wood Exposed to UV (Sunlight)
Lightly sand or power wash the surface to remove degraded wood fibers. Clean surface according to Surface Preparation instructions. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly after power washing and before application of the stain.
Application
Apply when air and surface temperatures are 40°F (4°C) but not above 90°F (32°C), humidity between 40%-70%. Do not thin. STIR THOROUGHLY before and during use. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. Spray application is acceptable, but application with a synthetic brush or roller with a small nap cover is recommended. If sprayed, the coating should be dry brushed or back rolled for color uniformity. Always apply in the direction of the wood grain. Apply one coat. The stain needs to penetrate the wood, not build up on the surface. Brush out any puddles before clean up. On vertical surfaces, start at the top on several boards and apply continuously across to a break at a door, window, or corner.
Maintenance
Reapply at 2 – 4 year intervals for vertical surfaces and 1 – 3 years on horizontal surfaces. Areas with harsh exposure to the sun, weather, or foot traffic will show wear more quickly than other surfaces.
Disposal
Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused contents in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
